People in Lisbon are just as excited as we are about the coming of summer, so throughout the month of June, in different places all over the city, people are invited to join in the fun at the Lisbon Festival (or Festas da Lisboa). The city will be buzzing with excitement, colour and entertainment. Among others, the locals, Portuguese people, tourists and guests from all over the world are invited to attend street parties, festivals, film projections, music and theatrical performances, fancy merry parades and folk festivities.
If you are in Lisbon for the summer festival, you are invited to listen to the melancholy rhythm of Fado, eat fish and drink local beverages, but also dance and make merry with the “Brides of Santo Antonio” at a large traditional wedding ceremony.
Also in June, there is a religious celebration most people come to attend: the Festivals of the Saints. Mainly celebrated in Alfama and on the Avenida de Liberdade, Festas dos Santos Populares is a festival that gives the city a festive look, with street decorations and giant parades. Beginning with a procession, the festivities finish at the end of the month with more street parties and an innovative boat procession on the river Tagus.
